This covered deck had a real problem underneath the surface. The existing wiring wasn't rated for outdoor use - and on top of that, it had rodent damage. That's not just a code issue, it's a safety hazard. We pulled it all out and started fresh.
We ran new outdoor-rated wiring the right way, then installed a ceiling fan and string lighting throughout the structure. The fan mounts centered under the polycarbonate roof panels, and the string lights run the perimeter of the pergola beams. Everything is properly supported and weatherproofed for an exterior environment.
A lot of homeowners don't realize that standard indoor wiring can end up in outdoor spaces - sometimes from a previous DIY job, sometimes just from a contractor cutting corners. It deteriorates faster, it can't handle moisture, and when animals chew through it, you've got a serious risk on your hands. Fixing it isn't just about making things look better. It's about making things safe.
When we do outdoor electrical work, we treat it differently than interior work because the conditions are different. UV exposure, temperature swings, moisture - all of it matters when you're choosing materials and running wire. Doing it right the first time means you won't be pulling it all out again in a few years.
This deck is now a space the homeowners can actually use without worrying about what's going on inside the walls. Good airflow from the fan, solid ambient lighting, and wiring that was done to code. That's the whole job.
